Honoring Those Who Served: Veterans Day 2026 in Glenwood

By Emily Swinford

Square Deal Real Estate hosts its annual Veterans Day Breakfast on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, from 7 to 9 a.m. at American Legion Harvey T. Rimel Post 141 in Glenwood, Iowa. It’s our way of saying thank you to the veterans and military families who make Southwest Iowa home.

As Veterans Day gets close, I always find myself thinking about why this day means so much to me, personally and professionally. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping many veterans and their families buy and sell homes. Working through VA loan requirements, understanding what military families face, and connecting them with local resources is one of the most rewarding parts of this job.

A community tied to military life

Glenwood sits less than 15 miles from Offutt Air Force Base, so our corner of Southwest Iowa is home to many active-duty service members, retirees, and their families. Iowa also offers several programs for veterans, including property tax credits and the Iowa Military Homeownership Assistance Program for those who qualify.

Helping veteran clients take advantage of those programs, and seeing what it does for their long-term financial footing, is something I take real pride in. Our veterans resources page lists the local VA office and the state programs we point people to first.

Our Veterans Day Breakfast

The breakfast has become one of my favorite traditions: a chance to sit down, share coffee, and simply say thank you. This year we’re co-hosting with One Goal Mortgage, American Legion Harvey T. Rimel Post 141, and Glen Haven Village.

We also partner with the Mills County Veterans Affairs office on our Dog Days of Summer for Veterans picnic at Glenwood Lake Park each summer, with live music, hot dogs, giveaways, and local vendors who share veteran resources. Watching that event grow each year is a reminder of how strong this community is.

A few years ago, I completed the 50-Mile March from Lincoln to Omaha, which raises awareness and money for veterans facing homelessness and mental health challenges. I still volunteer and donate today. Honoring veterans means more than one day of recognition. It means walking beside them through the changes and new chapters that come after service.

Buying or selling with your VA benefit

When I work with veteran clients, I see more than a transaction. It’s a chance to listen, advocate, and make buying or selling a home as smooth as possible. Eligible veterans and service members can use VA loans throughout Southwest Iowa, and we’ll connect you with lenders who know them well. Learn more about buying a home with us.

So this Veterans Day, whether you join us for breakfast, stop by one of our events, or take a quiet moment to honor someone who served, thank you. Your service shapes the community we’re proud to call home.
